Problems running McAfee VirusScan after running Registry Repair 4
Problems running McAfee VirusScan after running Registry Repair 4
Article
The Problem:
An error occurs after running Registry Repair:
"Components needed to run McAfee are missing and need to be reinstalled." This seems to occur on McAfee VirusScan version 10.
-or-
On some versions of McAfee, there is no startup error like this. (I.E. VirusScan 11) Instead, it has been reported by some users that McAfee Security Center no longer recognizes the VirusScan program or the Firewall as being installed. Reinstall of either program doesn't seem to fix this.
note:
The problem keys for VirusScan version 11 are in 2 categories:
File/path references
Com/ActiveX errors
The interesting thing is that all of these errors were identified as keys that made references to files that don't exist.
That happens alot after uninstalls, and Registry Repair is programmed to clean this sort of thing up.
Guess what? We verified that the files those keys are supposedly pointing to really don't exist. There isn't any reason that the McAfee keys that are removed by Registry Repair 4 should be breaking McAfee VirusScan. It is unexplainable.
Taking the following actions should repair the problem. In the end, you will have to add the ignore keys to your ignore list. That part is easy enough, but isolating them might seem intimidating. Fear not.
1) You want to start with both Registry Repair and VirusScan installed.
2) Open Registry Repair and put a check next to the two problem categories (file path references and com/active x entries).
3) Next, scan these two and repair all errors.
4) Keep running this scan untill you have 0 keys found in the 2 categories.
Now you have broken McAfee. Great! That's the first step.
5) Reboot your computer. Ignore the message if it appears "components are missing".
6) Now you need to uninstall McAfee completely. To do this, I highly suggest skipping the add and remove programs method. Instead, go to the following website and download the McAfee Products Removal Tool:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
7) I suggest saving this file (mcpr.exe) to your desktop or somewhere, for future use.
8) Install it, run it and use it to uninstall VirsusScan.
9) Reboot your computer.
10) Install VirusScan.
11) Open Registry Repair again. Run the same scan as before, checking only the com/active x and file path references category.
12) Don't repair anything this time. When the scan is complete, click [view errors].
13) Expand the categories if necessary to see the problem keys. Click the [ignore] button next to every key listed untill none are listed.
This should be enough to fix the problem. From here on out you should be able to scan and repair without bothering McAfee.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a list of keys that may need to be added to your ignore list. The exact keys may very depending on the version of your McAfee software.
Please note that it may just be a few of these keys or even just one causing the problem. We haven't yet narrowed down the exact key. But if you add any of these that appear to the ignore list, that should fix your problem.
