Why is my free hard drive space gone after using the “Shred Free Disk Space” tool?
When you use the "Shred Free Disk Space" tool or clean your free space in the system cleaner, Digital File Shredder Premium creates temporary files on your hard drive as a way to prevent previously deleted data from being recovered.
If this process was canceled or ended prematurely, the temporary files created by Digital File Shredder Premium may still reside on your hard drive(s).
To check for this error please do the following:
Open Windows Explorer or My Computer--> browse to the drive(s) you performed this action on.
Digital File Shredder Premium will have created a folder named "1", or "2", "3", etc for subsequent tries (e.g. C:\1).
Delete these folders to reclaim your hard drive space. (highlight all the sequentially numbered folders, and hold the shift key while pressing the delete key)
Deleting these folders may take a long time as there will be many temp. files in these folders. How does Digital Shredder Premium overwrite data? Digital Shredder Premium creates a temporary directory with the name "1" on the root of the hard drive that is used to shred free space. This directory is filled systematically 100's of thousands of files of varying sizes and specific patterns until all the free space on the hard drive is exhausted. These files will have name such as:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ_ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ_ABCDE.._34.yzy
These files will automatically be deleted/shredded upon completion. If for whatever reason the operating system crashed, or another unexpected issue occurred before the free space files are deleted, it is possible to have a hard drive completely filled. These files should only exist long enough to complete the free space shredding process and then automatically removed.
Should the file deletion step get interrupted for whatever reason, Digital File Shredder Premium, on restart should automatically detect this condition and proceed to delete the free space files, thereby reclaiming your usable hard drive space.
NOTE:
It is best to minimize potential interference from other utility software programs such as Anti-Virus Software and Disk Utilities. Should you experience a problem with reclaiming free space, please check that no other programs are running that could potentially be causing a conflict. Why doesn’t the drag and drop function work in Windows Vista?
The drag and drop feature is a limitation in Vista. This is a known issue that is currently being evaluated.
